Endless Why

I had a really great Mothers' Day. The Hubby took care of things in the morning so I could sleep in, which is all I could really ask for!

Right now I find that Baby J is a cinch. He needs my attention here and there, and I still have to help feed him, bathe him, clothe him, and diaper him. But it doesn't seem hard at all.

And then there is Scamper! Three and a half years old, and the world's greatest information gatherer! He is definitely here to try my patience right now. I hope I pass the test...eventually!

On the way home from Kid's Club at our local mall:

Scamp: "Why did we go to Kid's Club Mom, why?"

Me: "Did you want to go to Kid's Club?"

Scamp: "Yes."

Me: "Well, that is why we went."

Scamp: "Why did I want to go Mom, why?"

(Are you noticing the 'why' at the beginning and end of each sentence?)

Me: "You tell me why you wanted to go."

Scamp: "Because it is fun to go."

Me: "Yes it is."

Scamp: "Why is it fun Mom, why?"

Me: "You tell me. Why was it fun?"

Scamp: "They sing lots of songs, they read books, and you get to ride the carousel after."

Me: "That's right."

Pause.

Scamp: "Why do we get to ride the carousel Mom, why?"

Me: "They let you ride it for free one time every Thursday after Kid's Club."

Scamp: "I like to ride the carousel."

Long pause.

Me: (Are we done with this conversation?)

Scamp: "Why was Kid's Club inside today, why?"

Me: (I guess not!) "Because it is too hot outside."

Scamp: "Why is it hot outside, why?"

Me: "Because we live in (insert our state name here)."

Scamp: "Why is it hot in (insert state name here), why?"

Me: "(Insert state name here) is a desert area. It is very dry, and the sun is out all day long, making everything really hot."

(Yeah, I know, pretty awesome answer!)

Scamp: "Why is it a desert, why?"

Me: "A desert is an area without a lot of water or plants that grow."

Scamp: "Why are we living in a desert Mom, why?"

Me: "The desert was already here, and we just moved down to live in it."

Longer pause.

Me: (I can't believe he accepted that answer. That was lame!)

Even longer pause.

Me: "Whew!"

Scamp: "Why did you say 'whew' Mom, why?"

...

(Disclaimer: Ignoring or saying "I don't know" usually elicits a repeat of the question--only much louder.)

Tell me about it! You'd think "I don't know" would be a conversation ender!

LOL. I'm sorry, I know how this goes. Alex went through it for many, many years. Hopefully you don't have to endure it for that long! :)

He sounds so cute! I love the why at the beginning and end. Adorable! And I love the last question. :)

By the way...you have good music. :) I've been listening to it this morning as I did some cleaning. Thanks!

so funny. i totally remember when lyndi's alex was into asking "why" about everything (i think i was playing with her at a get-together at monta's). kenny's 4 yr old cousin is into this stage right now too...its pretty funny. she was over the other day and was asking a million questions because she couldn't understand that addie couldn't talk, eat normal food, etc. so cute.
